What is Iowa Service dogs?

IOWA

Inspiring Our Warriors of America: We are a nonprofit organization that trains service dogs for first responders and veterans. Volunteer Guardians raise and train each dog from puppyhood until we match the dog with its warrior. We incorporated and received 501(c)3 status in 2019.

OUR MISSION

Dedicated to helping first responders and veterans who have served their country and community reintegrate into civilian life by training/providing mobility and psychiatric service dogs at no charge.

The Impact

Our vision at IOWA Service Dogs is to provide a community that supports our first responders and veterans by increasing awareness, educating the public, and promoting the understanding of the beneficial relationship between handler and service dog. We are just a small piece of the puzzle for helping our warriors.

17

Veterans commit suicide Every day

According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, 17 veterans commit suicide each day. This is still an increase from the year prior.

*It was previously reported that 20 veterans commit suicide every day, however, that number included veterans, current service members, and former National Guard or Reserve members who were never federally activated.

127

Firefighter Suicides in 2020

According to Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance (FFBHA), there was 127 firefighter deaths by suicide in 2020. This number can rise as they validate and confirm deaths through confidential reporting.

5X

Higher for a law enforcement officer

According to Ruderman Family Foundation, the rates of PTSD and depression among law enforcement officers is five times higher than the civilian population.

Become a Volunteer

IOWA Service Dogs wouldn’t be the success it is without our volunteers. There are many opportunities to volunteer. Find one that fits with your lifestyle while making an impact on a warrior’s life.

Puppy Guardian

Guardians commit to raising and training a puppy for approximately 2 years. They take the puppy to weekly classes and on training field trips; they are responsible for completing any homework assignments and training objectives assigned by their trainer.

Program AMBASSADOR

We believe that education is a huge part of supporting those in need of service dogs. We would love to have you, you and your friends, or you and your organization working with us to spread the word about what we do.

Community Outreach

Want to raise awareness for IOWA Service Dogs and help educate the public? This is the role for you! As part of the Community Outreach team, you will talk to schools, businesses, clubs, and more about IOWA Service dogs.

Puppy Sitter

Not sure you’re ready to commit to a puppy 24/7? You can still be the puppy’s home away from home by being a Puppy Sitter. As a Puppy Sitter you will fill in as the puppy’s Guardian while it is in your care for a short time.

IOWA Advocate

With service dog fraud being a growing problem, it is important to understand the laws and processes that make a service dog different from a pet, a therapy dog, or an emotional support animal. Help us take a stand against animals that are being misrepresented as service animals.

Event Volunteer

We need event volunteers to help us at a variety of functions. This may include helping set up and take down tables and displays, answering questions from the public and more.
